ABOUT POLAR PLUNGE
The Polar Plunge® Winter Festival is Special Olympics Virginia’s largest fundraiser, attracting more than 10,000 people to an otherwise deserted beachfront in February. Individuals and teams, alongside our athletes and thousands of community members, experience heartwarming and bone chilling extremes as they take the plunge into the icy Atlantic Ocean in the height of winter! Anyone can participate; those under 18 must have a parent or guardian signature.

Other crowd favorites include the Boogie Down the Boardwalk Costume Parade and contest, musical entertainment, a gigantic sand sculpture, a Friday Night Plunge Party, Pee-Wee Plunge (for kids 10 and under), a Saturday morning 5K (new in 2011!), as well as vendor displays and giveaways.

2011 Polar Plunge Schedule of Events:

Friday, Feb. 4

10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cool School Challenge; Cool School Plunge takes place at noon

Noon to 7 p.m. Early Plunge Registration/Check-in & 5K Registration/Packet pick up, Ramada

6-10 p.m. Friday Night Plunge Party featuring local band Butter (under Main Tent, at the end of 7th Street on the beach).

Saturday, Feb. 5

7 a.m. 5K Registration and Packet pick up, Ramada

8:30 a.m. 5K run along the Boardwalk

10 a.m. Winter Festival Begins/Registration for Costume Contests (under Main Tent); Shuttle bus begins pick up at 19th Street lot

10:30 a.m. Sand sculpting tips & tricks, behind the main sand sculpture near the Main Tent

11 a.m. Opening Ceremony in the Main Tent

11:15 a.m. Sand sculpting tips & tricks, behind the main sand sculpture near the Main Tent

Noon Boogie Down the Boardwalk Costume Parade (meet at 6th Street)

12:30 p.m. Pee Wee Plunge in the Kids Zone for childen 10 and under
