Know where to go!
Teens With a Purpose, TWP, hosted their official launch party Wednesday, May 18th
at The Westin in Virginia Beach Town Center. Director Al Roker, host from the Today
Show, was the guest speaker. The launch party was for TWP’s third annual Fundraiser
and Gala on November 4th also at The Westin.
TWP addresses many issues ranging from HIV awareness, bullying and gang violence,
date violence, teen pregnancy, and other important issues that affect teens every day.
The group’s overall goal is to empower the youth because they will be our next doctors,
teachers, lawyers and business owners.
Chance Wilson, Chief Executive Officer of Hampton Roads Live Network, served as the
MC for the afternoon and encouraged local businesses and individuals to purchase tickets
for the Gala in November and/or tables for sponsorship.
TWP member Monika Charleston said, “TWP helps me change lives.” Monika has a
family member that has HIV and she wanted to educate other people about the disease.
Monika feels that people do not know the real facts about HIV.
Another active TWP member, Raevaughn Johnson uplifted the crowd with his
poetic lyrics. Raevaughn recited his poetry that reflected his views on abstinence and
confidence. “Boys are assuming the roles of daddys,” he reinforced within his poem
promoting abstinence. “I am worth the wait,” he said.
Al Roker said that TWP addresses a number of issues and needs in the Hampton Roads
area, especially during a time where cyber bullying is a prominent issue that can involve
an entire town. “Today’s teen will be tomorrow’s employee,” Roker said.
