Event Description

The Full Pink Moon is the name given to the full moon that occurs in the month of April. Each month of the year has its own designated "nickname". For a full list of them, click here.

The moon rises Thursday evening at 6:39 p.m. and sets Friday at 6:19 a.m., then rises again at 7:53 p.m. Friday night, according to Meteorologist Myles Henderson.

The Farmers' Almanac website states that this month's Full Moon nickname came from the herb moss pink, or wild ground phlox, which is one of the earliest widespread flowers of the spring. Other names for this month's celestial body include the Full Sprouting Grass Moon, the Egg Moon, and among coastal tribes the Full Fish Moon, because this was the time that the shad swam upstream to spawn.
