Event Description

Hope House Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides independent living support to adults with developmental disabilities since 1964, announces the dates for the 2009 Stockley Gardens Fall Arts Festival—October 17th & 18th, 2009, at the Stockley Gardens Park in the historic Ghent section of Norfolk. The park is located on the corner of Stockley Gardens and Olney Road in Norfolk. The hours of the festival, which is free and open to the public, are Saturday, October 17th from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. All proceeds benefit Hope House Foundation.

Over 150 artists have been selected to exhibit at the festival, which offers exhibition opportunities in every fine art medium, such as painting, ceramics, sculpture, photography and jewelry.

The awards for the festival will be presented at the After Hours Party/Artist Award Ceremony to be held on Saturday evening from 5 – 7 p.m. at the stage in the park. There will be over $5,000 in artists awards. A list of all award winners will be displayed at the Hope House Information Booth on Sunday, October 17th.

The student exhibit will feature college students selected to compete for cash awards, which will also be presented during the After Hours party on Saturday evening.

The Stockley Gardens Arts Festival poster design for this fall was created by local photographer Jeffrey Diener. Jeffrey won the Norfolk Artist Award at the 25th Anniversary Stockley Gardens Spring Arts Festival, which is sponsored by the Norfolk Commission on the Arts and Humanities.

The Festival judge will be Timothy Van Laar. He is an artist and writer who lives and works in Chicago and Champaign, Illinois. He received his MFA degree from Wayne State University in Detroit, MI. His work consists of paintings, drawings, collages, and installations that have been exhibited throughout North America and Europe. He is co-author of two books and has also written numerous reviews and catalog essays. Fulbright, Yaddo, the Howard Foundation, the Illinois Art Council, the Karl Hofer Gesellschaft, and the Ucross Foundation are among the many organizations that have supported his work. Recently he was a fellow at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. Among the collections that include his artwork are The Detroit Institute of Arts, The Illinois State Museum, and Herman Miller. He has been a Visiting Senior Lecturer at the Glasgow School of Art, Scotland and currently is a Professor of Art at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

A wide variety of musical talent will be featured over the weekend and will include well-known favorites such as the Jim Newsom Quartet, Rip Dizzy, Duncan & Danielle and the Tidewater Guitar Orchestra.

There will be two special guest performances:
Norfolk native Matt Miller’s band Graydon who now hails from Hollywood, California. Miller and his band Graydon formed in the fall of 2008, developing a high-energy pop rock sound blending the 60’s with today’s rock n’ roll. They have played packed shows at L.A.’s famed Hotel Café’, performed at the 2009 South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin, TX you can check them out at www.myspace.com/graydonmusic. They will perform on Saturday, October 17th from 5-7 p.m.

All the way from Manchester, England we welcome Vinny Peculiar (aka Alan Wilkes), singer-songwriter and poet. He’s released seven critically acclaimed albums, created SOUP ART with Bill Drummond (KLF, The 17) and his various bands have included ex members of The Smiths, The Fall and OASIS. Vinny Peculiar, will perform Saturday, October 17th from 4-5 p.m and a special encore performance at The New Belmont beginning at 10PM.
