Mommy Monologue: A Day at the Carnival

[VBnightlife is Virginia Beach's top resource for "All Things Virginia Beach" Featuring shopping, dining, reviews, entertainment, events, music, fundraisers & more!]

It’s so funny that as adults we still love to live out our childhood by riding on rides that will cause us to complain about back pains at work the next day and to spend our hard earned money on a Dollar Store stuffed animal that we carry with pride like it’s a trophy. Yes, ladies and gentlemen I was that adult this Saturday at the carnival in Norfolk and I had a great time!

It was Abby’s first time at a carnival and she had a ball. All of the carnival’s proceeds went to local Kiwanis charities.

Of course we rode the kiddy roller coaster and even though the shaky carts caused my mommy instincts to kick in, Abby put my worries to ease as she clapped her hands and laughed with each turn. My brave baby even rode the motorcycle merry go round all by herself. Okay, I’ll admit my husband was actually going to ride with her but the attendant didn’t allow adults to ride along. So we were actually forced to quickly cut the apron strings, but she loved it and of course as a proud mommy I snapped a zillion pictures, as if no other child has ever ridden a carnival ride solo.

Then of course we played the usual carnival games and had to win at least one stuffed animal to take home and toss into the abyss of useless toys. As we walked, I saw the words funnel cake and I’m not sure if I was more excited about that or the sign that stood next to it that read Fried Oreos! I’m a funnel cake virgin, so I decided to let all of my morals go for a few minutes and stuff my face with the fried sugar delight and I loved it!

We had a great family day at Abby’s first carnival experience and I can’t wait until she gets older and is able to ride the drop zone and the bigger roller coasters. I love making memories with my family.

Next week I will be at the Pretlow Branch Library in Norfolk (in Ocean View) for the Berenstein Bears story hour that begins at 2 p.m. It’s completely free and the Pretlow Branch Library is equipped with a play center for toddlers and has tons of other activity areas for older children. You can find out more information about the event and other upcoming Norfolk Public Library (NPL) story times on our website or visit http://www.npl.lib.va.us/

No, she didn't want any of the funnel cake. Yes, she loved the rides!
